These make great shop fans.....put a plug, maybe a switch on the wire ..... a little wire mesh around the moving parts, bent over the sharp edges or cut some vacume tube and slip on them. Voila! Instant shop fan !
 
You right about the shop fan. I got a little variable speed switch off Ebay (like a light dimmer but more amp rating) and wired it up with a long cord. Now I can have a little breeze or blast all the dust out.
 
Check your amp draw with it plugged in and running. These are designed to have the airflow restricted a bit or else they are working too hard.

I know it sounds counter intuitive that the restricted airflow makes the motor work less, but less airflow = less work.

If it's from a heat pump air handler it will probably be 240v also.
