Gotta say, baby yotes are kinda cute...

All jokes aside…. You did the right thing. I hope your dog gets well soon, and thanks for sharing this with the ODT. I coyotes are very interesting to watch. I definitely see how destructive and dangerous they are. At the same time I’m fascinated by them. I have only witnessed them about 10 times in my life. Mostly running across fields or streets. I did once witness a cat getting chased down in the woods by one. Right as the yote pounced I hollered out A-YO ( kind of like Tony Danza on who’s the boss) and the yote stopped for a second, long enough for the cat to run up a tree and into someone’s yard. I was fishing in a pond behind my subdivision . That yote turned and ran. Another yote was running up behind me ( towards the cat) it’s like they pre planned this flank. When he saw me he stopped dead in his tracks , he was smaller than other yotes I have ever seen , I fumbled around in my pocket and all I had was my “ fishing gun” a 25 acp raven. Before I could even lift it to eye level, the muddah FAWKAH, disappeared like a ghost. It was awesome!

Not like killing them would make a difference anyway. Once the other females notice the absence they'll just produce larger litters until the numbers are up again. DNR says they max out at 35lbs, but I'm pretty sure I've seen some in Gwinnett and Hall that had to be pushing 50.

They are cute. You sir are kindhearted - the proverb of the scorpion comes to mind. Its hard to live with coyotes. I live in Smyrna in a neighborhood and often see coyotes (mostly at night) and a beautiful red fox (day and night) that walks with me my two dogs and my cat. I've had two run ins with the coyotes and my daughters rabbits- it sucked. Coyotes get a bad rep for the same reason they are awesome - amazing survivor/thrivers opportunistic hunters and scavengers they hunt alone or in groups usually pairs and eat small mammals, (unfortunately pets and livestock too) birds, carrion, fruits, berries, and garbage but they rarely attack people. The pups have a good chance at Yellow River.

Alot of folks don't realize how aggressive yotes can be. There are 2-3 times during the year when they are brazen and right now is one being pup season. Most of my travels and adventures when encountered have seen 80-90% of the time they tuck tail and skidaddle! Good on you for the tough decision.
🙏 for your pup though
