The spear is arguably more utilitarian, so for "quietly hunting prey" maybe... First, define your need then decide a on a list of "tools for the job". I clearly love swords and I am trained in sword/axe&shield. But a sword won't kill something 10' away, a sword isn't intended to cut down a tree or smash thru a brick wall

Thank you, guys! It looks like the show may be a good starting point. After all this, it looks like I will have a lot of work to do.
To answer the question "need", no, want YES. I am starting in the Martial Arts and looking for a multiple purpose blade, practice, cutting, kata etc. On a lighter note, with the cost of ammo these days, I forsee a future when we may need to revert back to medieval tactics for protection.LOL... If you ask me I rather take a bullet over blade, or neither.
I kind of always felt like this since I was a kid. A strange atraction to blades and blunt instruments. Kind of like a reincarnation of some sort, if you know what I mean... by that, I mean not something homicidal or anything, just being a whole and a natural at it, even before I started formal training.

Ronin Dojo series, perfect for the bodged cuts of a beginner, cheap and durable.

Studied battojutsu for years now and I find its a good choice for cutting.

Sword buyers guide has all the info, go have a read and then pick one you like the look of :).

The ratswords video impressed me. They start at around $300. My cane knife will take those trees down about as quick for $15. That is not to say I don't want a ratsword, its just not my first choice for a survival "knife".
p.s. I would never do that with my katana as every job has a proper tool.

Where do you go about learning axe and shield fighting around here? Sounds kind of interesting.
