gunbroker bidding

The word is "shilling" and it's actually against the law in most states.

We have one local auctioneer that doesn't even have to have a bidder, he will bump a bid from "that fellow in the back". Why I always sit in the back.

Anyway, any auction site is going to have shilling. Sure the seller may have to pay auction fees, unless of course the buyer is "non-performing", which cuts down the fees.

When Fleabay was getting off the ground, with certain categories of items, you just assumed that shilling was going on.

The auction sites claim they monitor it, but their efforts are half hearted, because in the long run of 10's of thousands of transactions, they make money off of it.

Shilling is just one of those little irritations in life you have to learn to recognize, and accept that it is going on no matter what you do.

Simple, bid your max and walk away. Often people get caught up and bid far more than I would. Bought and sold on there many times over the years.

Lately I’ve seen two items I bid on , not high enough , relisted a week later due to a “ non paying bidder “ . Both were “won “ , by a NR (not rated ) bidder . AKA new member . I’m watching one particular type of gun , bidding on them occasionally. I’m seeing quite a few new non rated bidders. But I’ll keep trying. Now that Gunbroker is collecting sales tax on everything they’ve lost their charm. Shameless plug to Jack’s Pawn in Dalton . I bought a NIB gun from them for $400 less than the going rate on Gunbroker. They’re GREAT to deal with !
