Disagree. In reality, this was not a tie.

Sand was poured in volume directly into the exposed internals of the AK. That's not what ANY firearm was designed for, AK47 included. As I also stated, the AK didn't go down hard with the sand. I was able to manually cycle it and fire successful shots, simulating "single shot" mode. I would not call that going down "hard". The AR locked up to the point of needing a couple of people and a few tools just to get it open and unlocked. That is what I call going down "hard".

True, but manual cycling of the bolt wont fare well against an m4 operating at 100 percent... so an Iraqi troop would have been at a big disadvantage unless you were near something thar could blow the sand out quickly before an ambush. At the same time, in a combat situation, that m4 was down. Period. Having to completely disassemble and clean a bcg, oil it, etc ain't hapenning quickly. A troop running and tripping in gook would be hosed. Ill give the nod to the AK, simply because it did fire single shot, but not necessarily effective.

Another AR mag question:

You mentioned they were USGI, did they have green or orange followers? I ask because the USGI ones are starting to be issued with orange (no-tilt) followers. Not trying to make excuses for the AR but it does show the military is accepting the flaws of the original USGI mags and trying to correct them.

In Iraq, even in a complete sand storm, I see the AK still functioning reliably. Remember, I poured 25 pounds of sand directly onto (and into) the AK's internals. That's VERY unrealistic. On the other hand, is it unrealistic to think the AR could be dropped into the dirt with the bolt locked back (as it was in the test when it locked up)?

yes. An AK with an open bolt is highly unlikely so ill agree with that.however an ar going down bolt back isn't exactly unrealistic. You have to ask HOW would that occur. Its easy to think of a troop running for cover while under fire and tripping or getting knocked off their feet by a mortar or landmine in close proximity, if they fire that last round and are reloading or haven't reloaded, the magwell and bolt are opened to whatever that rifle goes down in. If nws was in that situation, reloaded and his gun went click click click, it would be his last few seconds and he would be going he in a box.

By the same token, I doubt Muslims are highly up on their trigger discipline. If a Shiite troop was running and fell into a sandune with his finger on the trigger, it would allow the sand to pour directly into the rifle as it fired some shots off. While you were able to compensate, you didn't have what a terrorist would have. Fear and an adrenaline dump. The minute that first click would have occurred if the AK would have missed, the terrorist would have been in panic mode and unable to respond as calmly as you did, thereby the AK would go down. Either way, I expected the m4gery to fail miserably and I'm surprised at the results
