Another AR mag question:

You mentioned they were USGI, did they have green or orange followers? I ask because the USGI ones are starting to be issued with orange (no-tilt) followers. Not trying to make excuses for the AR but it does show the military is accepting the flaws of the original USGI mags and trying to correct them.

Either way you're transitioning to your side arm on both guns,until you have an opportunity to fix the problem. I call that a tie. Both guns had a failure point, to which they didn't operate as a semi auto rifle. Me personally I wouldn't be scared to use either one. I was surprised by both... positively and negatively.

yes. An AK with an open bolt is highly unlikely so ill agree with that.however an ar going down bolt back isn't exactly unrealistic. You have to ask HOW would that occur. Its easy to think of a troop running for cover while under fire and tripping or getting knocked off their feet by a mortar or landmine in close proximity, if they fire that last round and are reloading or haven't reloaded, the magwell and bolt are opened to whatever that rifle goes down in. If nws was in that situation, reloaded and his gun went click click click, it would be his last few seconds and he would be going he in a box.

By the same token, I doubt Muslims are highly up on their trigger discipline. If a Shiite troop was running and fell into a sandune with his finger on the trigger, it would allow the sand to pour directly into the rifle as it fired some shots off. While you were able to compensate, you didn't have what a terrorist would have. Fear and an adrenaline dump. The minute that first click would have occurred if the AK would have missed, the terrorist would have been in panic mode and unable to respond as calmly as you did, thereby the AK would go down. Either way, I expected the m4gery to fail miserably and I'm surprised at the results

The bolt was not back on the AK during the sand test. The safety was off allowing access to the fire control group of the AK, but the bolt was closed. The dust cover was open on the AR during the sand test, but that doesn't really allow any access for anything which is why the AR was able to shrug off the sand like it was nothing.

Perhaps if I had shaken the AR a little better, maybe even pulled the mag before trying to fire it after burying it with the bolt back, it might have done better. As I pulled it out of the ground I watch the dirt funneling into my chamber and I knew then before I even closed the bolt that the gun was done. In reality I would have either transitioned to my pistol until I get get to cover and pull the AR apart to get the dirt out, or I would have immediately found cover and popped the pin to pull the upper off.


In a defensive situation, I would have never just dropped the bolt and tried to fire after that.
