I'm looking at budget options for a cheap, throw-around deer gun to reach out 200 yards at the most across my field. Handi-Rifle comes to mind, perhaps in .308 or 30-06. Anybody got them? What kind of accuracy do you get?

I want one in s&w 500. Since I already have the reloading stuff for it why not.
At the distances I'd be shooting it'd work great. Just in case the random bear comes along like last year.

I like them. Most of the time the prices they go for on here though you could buy a bolt or lever gun for the same price. I've never understood that.

They could be that much, I've never priced them new, but if I'm spending $300 I'm getting a .30-30 or a cheaper bolt gun.

They typically go for $300 with a scope new. The ones for sale on here tend to be new gun prices without a scope or rings and butchered up "customized" with paint or non factory fitted barrel. You can make a non factory fitted barrel work if you know what you are doing, but I prefer my guns to function properly. There is a website dedicated to H&R single shot rifles. They are what they are, a entry level gun without all the bells and whistles that typically functions fine for what they were designed to be. Not everyone needs nor wants a repeating rifle for hunting. Aim small, miss small. The first shot should be the money shot, follow up shots are for those that screwed up the first shot.
