Happy Day! AC bought the farm! Whee!

Yeah, I've had mine worked on the last 2 years running. This time it went from fine to DRT overnight and I paid $65 to be told it had less than 1 pound of freon in it. Uhhh...<1 pound? CRAP! and $70 a pound for freon. So..lemme see, $65 to come out, $70 a pound for 5-6 pounds every time and it went out pretty damn fast so...

sigh.

Might still be slightly cheaper to superglue the old one together a while but probly not worth it. Maybe if I was planning one selling the house REAL soon. ;)

Mine just took 4 lbs of freon and it cost me 125. Crazy how prices vary.

Get multiple quotes. $6K may be right depending on the details but damn.

I just had 3 brand new units installed in my house. A 1.5 ton for the downstairs, a 1 ton for upstairs and a 1/2 ton for our master bedroom and bathroom. Everything was replaced inside and out except wiring. All 3 are heat pumps My total was $11,600.00.

The new freon laws SUCK! Makes all the older systems harder to get repaired and gives the installers an excuse to force
you into a whole new system!

Home freon is going through the same government bull **** that R12 for cars went through. ****ing EPA/global warming morons will bankrupt us all before they are satisfied.

Yeah, I've been trying to just find basic pricing info on the net but for all the big talk about how you can find anything on the internet, a straight answer aint on of those things. Ever friggin site asks the questions about home size, type etc but then they have no answers, just ask for email and telephone #. **** 'em. If I want MORE spam....

FYI my neighbor uses capt dave and says he is top notch and fair with his pricing.

Let me know when you need an estimate my neighbor is runs his own Heating an Cooling Business an is damn good.

Nothing against Dave, he may well be top notch but if traveling all this way to do the job is still somehow profitable for him shouldn't I wonder about HIS rates too. ;) Same with Tifton Silverado. You know I make that drive weekly. I can't see loading all that equipment and material all the way up here, doing the job, making a profit and STILL being more reasonable than locals. I DO need to check one more dealer though. But I think he's a Trane dealer too. And Trane won't let you look at prices online, only refers me back to the local contractor.

Just a couple to look at prices of equipment but you need to know what style of system and tonnage. Also if you are on the old system and its the split style you may have to change your line set as well. Im am not an a/c guy but I educated myself after getting screwed royally last year.

Great links! Thanks!

It's looking like the 15 SEER unit I should be getting is equivalent to ones costing between 3 and 4k just for the unit on this page:

http://www.acdirect.com/air_source_heat_pump_.php

Add on delivery, installation, R410(I think), and the re-location of the air handler and ducting from the "closet" it's in to the attic to allow for the larger variable speed blower, and maybe the cost is only "OMIGOD!" high and not INSANELY high. LOL!

$6K for 15 SEER equipment plus relocation of the Air Handler is not bad.

Most companies will negotiate a little.

That's good to hear. Somehow, no matter what the deal, I always manage to walk away feeling great only to be told what a dumbass I am and how bad I got screwed. Hell, I EXPECT to get screwed in most dealings, just not TOO bad. Like Langford said...educating yourself to keep from getting royally screwed... But when the AC stops altogether and the family starts freaking out it's hard to try to learn SEER, R22 vs R410 because the EPA is run by Earth firsters and "split system"? sounds pretty damn technical till you finally find an explaination...duh! LOL! All this stuff is down right intimidating and I think intentionally so. Ignant people like me will just throw money at it to make it go away.

Dave (and all) I appreciate the input. I'm going to read more on the sites Langford posted, call a number or two I got PMed and one more local guy and see how it goes. Unless someone can really beat the Trane I'm looking at for price and/or significant features then I'll probably just end up with it.
