I’m replacing the hardie plank around my chimney. Do I need a starter strip on the first run? I’m hesitant to do this because it will put holes in the step flashing. If I install the hardie board 1 1/2” above the roof line per instructions do I need a starter strip?

I use a open cell exterior rated foam strip with psa (usually frost king weather seal or similar) along the bottom- the open cell foam lets water through and the psa usually allows the siding to expand and contract as well does not harm the flashing. This should not be exposed or touching the roof or roofing it is not a seal or insulation and serves as a spacer to kick the bottom of siding out to the same distance as the next piece

Match it up with what’s on the existing walls and use some type of glue rather than penetrating the flashing

Clear sealant/adhesive from a roofing supply house.
Never use open cell outside.

My initial question was if a starter strip of Hardie Board is necessary between the roof and first piece of cut Hardie Board. I’ll have a 1 1/2” gap between the Hardie board and roof line per the installation instructions. The slope of the roof is a 9/12 for the roof and cricket. The Hardie board will be cut to that slope and installed 1 1/2” above the roof line.

For the flashing I was planning on nailing it to the wall only so the roof could be fully replaced in the next few years and the new roof shingles could be weaved into the replaced step flashing.

I was also planning on adding ice and water damn to the wall of the chimney and then installing step flashing over it. This seems like over kill but I don’t want to have to do this again. 9” of ice and water damn installed in the wall and deck seems to be an agreeable practice.
