I put the whole trap in a big paper lawn bag with the trap gate facing out.
Perfect fit and you can grab the handle through the paper.
Transport in my pickup. To release, I just lower the tailgate, turn the trap facing the rear and open the gate.
Out the gate is the only place the c*** can see. Sometimes it takes a whack or two on the back of the trap, but most times the c*** quickly ejects out the back of the pickup.
Works good for feral cats too.
I call it the c***/cat witness protection program... new identity, new place to live, new life.

I used to climb the tree and shake the coon loose. I would let my friend catch it below.
