I just got a set of Skull candies for $10 at Wal-Mart. I really like the way they sound. They even block out the majority of the lawnmower and weed eater sounds. Even block out the wife when I'm listening to my classic country on Saturday nights. That right there is worth it.

You're kidding right? Those are the two brands that no knowledgeable person would be caught dead with.

Etymotic. Shure, a lot of models. And obviously, Sennheiser. All give far more quality per dollar than Bose or "Beats".

Word of advice: if their marketing budget is larger than their R&D budget, they're a bad choice. Also, if clowns who pay way too much for sneakers are showing them off... they're a bad choice.

Well, assuming you care about audio quality, instead of looking "trendy".

As a pilot or passenger?

As a passenger on commercial flights the Bose qc series the best..... Worth every penny of their high price. I'm on my second pair and use them 40-50 hours a month every month. My first pair lasted about 3 years with 70+ hours a month use.

As far as pilot headphones, I'm not up on GA offerings. I use a small ear bud, don't need a big headset in the cockpit of a 767....

Grado SR125i, Panasonic RP-HD10C, Grado SR60, EE-MU Walnut or Yamaha HPH-MT8. None are noise canceling but have great sound quality. I own a pair of each of these cans and like all for different reasons. I also have a beats and bose, but let the kid use them. I also run a DAC and headphone amp when using them. The Grado SR80 is supposed to be a really nice set for the money as well. Geez, I guess I really like music.

Unfortunately in an airplane noise canceling is a must... Basically, you have to turn your ears into a quiet room before quality sound can be heard...

I have not found that to be true, unless you are in the back of a 172, even then the noise cancelling aspect is going to be useless. In commercial passenger aircraft, I have not had any problems overcoming cabin ambient sound with over the ear models of quality headphones. Just my experience. I have some noise canceling Beats, I let my kids listen to music with them, I use the others.
