Hello to all my deer rifle enthusiasts…

We have been very pleased with the savage 110 we bought for my son.

Speaking of Savage 110, I literally just unboxed a pair of NIB ones I won from an estate/collector as part of a 10 gun purchase. Took pics of them 1hr ago. Both of them are 110 HCP models in 338 Lapua Magnum. A bit much for Georgia deer, but if you need something with enough umph to drop a deer 1000yrds away, it'll do the trick. Looking over the rifle for the first time, fit and finish looks very nice. Never handled a Savage before, but I'm satifsied with the quality. Heard they shoot very well too. Great bang for the buck imo. I'm going to hog hunt with mine.

Dang it man! Yeah 243 is working great for everything we have asked of it. I’m a <200 yard guy when it comes deer and it’s also done great on pigs

My go-to deer rifle for the past few years has been a SS Ruger Scout in 450 bushmaster. I got it for under 650ish off GB brand new, penny start, no reserve auction. $300 fixed magnification (2.7X) scout scope and you're good to go. It is very accurate and is ideal for ranges of under 250 yards. Its my hunting rig for adverse conditions/environments. Used it earlier this year island hopping remote Georgia costal islands with my Zodiac hunting hogs & deer. Perfect gun/caliber for this kind of hunting in thickets or heavy wooded areas. Uses 250 to 395 grain bullets delivering 2800ft-lbs of energy, shooting pretty flat for <250yards. For 1K total, I could not think of a more fitting gun even if it was twice the cost.

In the last 20 years, I think the "new developments" in rifles have been these:

-- AR-15 and AR-10 rifles are getting new respect as modern sporting rifles, with good accuracy for big game hunting to a few hundred yards.

-- The prices of high quality optics has gone down, thanks to more competition and manufacturing in overseas locations. (Don't know if the Russia - Ukraine war and resulting economic sanctions on Russia has changed that, though?)

-- It's easier to find a synthetic stock that has a metal reinforcing insert, and two lugs to transfer the pressure from the action to the stock, not just one for "the" stock screw.

-- Field grade hunting rifles can now be had with nice triggers. You no longer need to spend $200 with a gunsmith or a drop-in replacement trigger group.

-- Bolt action rifles are more and more often coming with threaded muzzles for suppressor use. If you're not interested in using a silencer for hunting, your gun may benefit from attaching some other muzzle weight or accessory that could improve barrel harmonics and thus accuracy (or it could hurt accuracy; you have to test it yourself and see).

Some of these things may apply to your search for a new deer rifle, or not. You've got options.
