Hello to all my deer rifle enthusiasts…

I watched Backfire TV and Jim was singing praises about the Ruger American gen ll as being a solid and super accurate rifle. I like that guys torture test and other reviews. Very cool and informative videos online.
He does good reviews for hunting rifles. He is biased toward stock ergonomics that favor prone shooting, which isn't a big concern for some of us. I don't think he would endorse a heap of crap, which can't always be said of magazine writers.

I think, mainly owing to poor sales and low profit margins, S&W stopped producing the Thompson Center Compass, which might have been the all time best value in a competent, entry-level hunting rifle. Adjustable trigger. 5R rifling. Threaded barrel. Three position safety. Free floated barrel. 60 degree bolt throw. Scope mounts included. I've had the 308 for a while. It's my wife's deer rifle. It's a terrific rifle, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone, if you can find it used.

As someone who consolidated years ago as well, I am very glad I did. However, just be aware that .308 and 6.5 CM don't kill deer nearly as effectively as your .270. Expect to have to trail a few, and I suggest driving the front shoulder in most situations. Don't get me wrong, they both kill, but they are not the DRT calibers that .270 and 25-06 are on whitetails. You will be OK as long as you understand what you have.
