One of my kids ate a couple of these berries, only a couple so she's OK. My wife first thought they were pokeberries. I told her over the phone they're not and we don't have any poke salad growing in our yard. By the time I got home she convinced herself they were elderberries, which I'm pretty sure is wrong too.

It's a vine growing into a sweetgum tree. I can't find anything on the interwebs that looks the same.

Yeah- definitely not poke berries. Not elderberries either if it's on a vine.

I'm going to have to consult a book at home later. I don't have any good guesses on this one. Tell you kids to quit eating things they find in the yard ;)

Let's see, vine growing w/ purple berries? Could it be muscadines? I can't see the vine in the pictures, but they look like small muscadines... Your child will be fine :)

Definitely not muscadines. The berry are about the size of poke berries, maybe 1/4-1/3 in, across. Sorry for the lack of perspective.

I am still going w/ muscadines until one of our resident horticulturalists speak up. :)

Okay, changing my vote after seeing picture of berries in hand...

The inside looks very muscadine-like, clear flesh with fairly large seeds. I touched the flesh to my tongue and it numbed my tongue a little.
