Hey guys! Thinking about build a small chicken coup in my back yard.

If you are planning on moving the unit around the yard don't use wheels, put it on metal skids. Chickens attract rodents, if you can't stand the sight of mice, don't get chickens. We don't save money with eggs, even with the higher prices. Watching them while drinking your coffee is much cheaper than any therapy though. They make me smile, its worth it.

Yeah my two cents, be very aware of chicken math, it’s a very real thing. We started with 6 hens in 2019, went to 50 within 2 years 😁

But we love them, they all have names and personalities. They come when we call them, free range all day and go inside before dark every day. We just feed, water, and collect the golden eggs.

As mentioned before, whatever you choose for your coup, ensure you predator proof it like you would your house or safe. If not, they’ll be gone before you can say oh crap…

I have an estimate from Carolina Coops https://carolinacoops.com/ to make a really nice 10’x10’ coop with a 30’ foot run. Needless to say the price tag was enormous (80k). We have pulled a permit and had the tree removed in the area are going to build.

We are going with 16’x16’ 1/2 greenhouse and 1/2 chicken coop with an attached covered run.

I understand you are thinking small and have lots of questions but spend some time looking at the videos on youtube. You don’t have to pay to get some really good ideas from them.

No taller than my 6 foot privacy fence. Hens only no roosters.

Any recommendations for plans for something like this?

FYI- if you have someone build it, it will cost a couple of grand. A guy in Kentucky is building me one because I don’t have time. Cost was 4K and a little bigger that that one.
