Home invasion stories

If someone kicks in your door (or just opens an unlocked one) and comes in, the law (in Georgia) says that you don't have to wait and see their intentions. It would sure stink to shoot someone but it would stink a lot worse not to.
I would rather deal with the emotional aftermath where I was still living.

My wife was getting out of the Army and we decided to stay in GA (nice people here!). I landed a job on base and decided to rent a house until we decided where we were going to end up and this is where I made several mistakes that led up to a burglary and a little bit more.
1st: I moved into a place I found on craigslist without really checking out the neighborhood... but hey the price was right and it was only for a couple months. Turns out I moved into "The Hood" and being the Caucasian ambassador of good will that I am, I hired a kid pushing a lawn mower around the neighborhood to cut my grass. Mistake #2
The kid would come around unannounced and ask if I had any work for him... he was getting my schedule down. On one day when he was cutting the grass his lawnmower broke and I let him in my house to borrow my tools which was mistake #3. He got a good look at my stuff and of course near my tools was my wife's AK 74 that was left out.
I saw the kids eyes on the rifle and instantly knew what was up. After that day I didn't call him to come do the lawn and when he came by asking I told him straight out he made me uneasy and I didn't want him around.
Mistake #4 happened when I didn't get the cops involved.
I came home to find my TV gone one day and quickly went room to room. PS3, TV, my 1911, tokarev, and pistol grip pump gone along with 1200rds of sealed Tok ammo. I noticed my wife's jewelery was still there and figured I must have come in as they went out so I ran out the backdoor they had kicked in and saw a car pulling away from the vacant house next door and various cables from my tv and game system littering the yard. I got my sense about me and let it go, realizing they had more firepower than I had on me. Called the police, told the detectives I about the kid, they knew him well. Said it was a typical technique his gang uses and that his first FELONY charge was when he was 10years old. No witnesses of course so they couldn't get the kid without evidence. Cops were really great and professional.
Two days later my wife gets out of the Army, comes home and deices she is taking a nap. I took the time to head out on my motorcycle for a quick ride. ANOTHER MISTAKE! I guess the punks thought I was gone and didn't realize she was home, so my wife awakes to the sound of someone trying to open windows and then prying the NEW back door open. I guess he was coming back for that AK he saw and he almost got it, bullets first. My wife locked and loaded and took aim at the door while on with 911. Thugboy hears her rack the action and flees.
We learn from our mistakes. I feel like an idiot for getting set up and robbed and almost having my wife in a firefight. Hopefully some of you can learn from my mistakes as well.
Oh, we freakin' MOVED the next week!

Never had to and hope I never do. My wife likes the Peace of Mind knowing we are armed. Ruger 357 LCR, Rossi 38 special, Beretta PX4 .40, 20 gauge Double Barrel with Hollow Point Slugs. That was a list of the loaded firearms in my house. The Ruger is on my nightstand and the Rossi on my wife's side. Double Barrel behind the door and the Beretta in the closet. I've also got a sign on my front porch saying,"You can have my guns when I run out of bullets." Hopefully the jerks in the Section 8 subdivision down the road will get the hint before they try to come in. I see them walking down the road sometimes and then I go out on the back porch and squeeze off a few rounds just to let them know. hahaha

Careful now, that's my subdivision.......:)

I'm a veteran but I'm also a victim of a violent home invasion on my birthday in 2000 just weeks after having spinal surgery, my inscision had just fused together. They were armed but didn't anticipate crashing in on someone that could and would fight back. After a very nasty hand to hand fight for my life I was blindsided and knocked unconscience by the one I didn't see... I woke up next to my 590. I've heard and read all types of do's and don'ts over the years and can attest that 99% of the advice you get is 100% wrong. You CAN have a battle plan to cover you but it won't unless you live in a 1 room home with only 1 way in and out and carry constantly 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
My advice, a good dog to protect yourself and your family is the BEST line of defense. It gives you time to react properly, that millasecond buffer zone. Don't worry about that dog it's primal instinct is to attack a threat and even a mid size dog can tear you up. Despite how good you THINK you are or how well trained you may be you can't anticipate every scenerio that CAN happen especially inside what you consider to be your "safe zone". Aside from everyone in here being a gun owner you need to know how to protect yourself WITHOUT a firearm or other weapon even while being hurt, having one sure does improve your odds.
If they're in your home blast away. You have a GOD given right to defend your life, your family and your property, worry about the legalities later !
Two of the 3 were shot but lived and went to prison.
Thank you Mr Mossberg !

LOL! Really?

I don't care if I left a trick-or-treat size bag of Skittles sitting in plain sight and someone kicks my door down in a desperate need of a sugar fix. If you invade my home for one Skittle it would never "haunt" me to plant you. I sincerely hope I never have to pull the trigger on anyone but whatever reason they use as an excuse for breaking into my home is obviously justification enough to them to risk their life, and being inside my home is justification enough to me to end it.

There are no two sides to a break in that are both justified. If you break in, you get shot. Period.

10x that no questions asked --no hart feeling--

Here is a quick "heads up:"

I heard about a new (to me) M.O. Lately.

The bad guys will go around a house and open up one (or usually all) external faucets. The occupants of the house will hear water running and think they have a broken pipe.

As soon as they get outside to see where the leak is, the bad guys will jump 'em, then they will proceed to take whatever they want from the house which is now wide open.

-Beware of this one. I just heard about it recently. Pretty devious.

Love that story!

Thanks for the insights. And it is good to see the good guy came out on top.
