Hooking catfish in their backs while noodle fishing.

We have just started catfishing using noodles and as a family are having a lot of fun. We went to riverbend just south of Columbus yesterday. Our trip was cut short but we still caught 3 nice cats. What I don’t understand is two were hooked in the tail just behind the last rear fin. What can cause this? We are using noodles, twine, weight and circle hook. We did have several that danced but got away with the bait. What can we do to make Thursdays trip better?

Dude! I ftrgging' don't know! I would love to know the same.

All I now is, there's been many kitties where I have hooked a large Kittie in the tail the nose. (If you're thinking of off a different context, your are sick :). Lol!

I do not KNOW that answer!

I leave it to more experienced fisherman that I. At the same time, if i know some chit doesn't work, I will speak up :)

All catfish species are gong to relate to current. But if I were going for numbers, I would go for Gizzard Thread or Threadfin Shad drifting down below the current, and any current breaks the offer, like ridges they offer against the current flow, especially in a current below a dam.

Could be current brakes on the surface, even behind a significant top water branch hanging in the top water flow.

That could be a great location if current is being generated.

If that were in the morning where a current flow was high because of a distant upstream dam, so be it.

It were a a flow from a distant dam may take several hours to reach, so be that also.

Current flow in a river is gonna make them wake up far more reliably than deep under a dam below a reservoir though.

That makes sense.

We run 10-12
I usually run 36-60 I only use about 4-6 ft line on jugs the cats will come up.i catch them all the time in 20-50 ft of water
I put them out in 10-12 ft about 25’ apart and run them down the bank.with only 10-12 keep rolling them down the banks—after you put them give them about 15 mins,go back and get first 4 roll them ahead of last one and repeat.
