Sometime this summer, my wife and daughter and I were driving down Braselton Hwy when we saw a little dog in the middle of traffic.
I pulled over and when there was a break in the traffic, I got the dog and brought it back to my van. It was too weak to run and didn't try to put up a fight. It probably weighed about 12 pounds and it was covered in dirt and ticks. We took it to the local Petco, got her cleaned up with a nice warm shower and then found an emergency vet.
My 14yr old daughter had already named her before I got her in the car, "Lola".

Well she survived and got pretty healthy.

Lola weighs about 25 pounds now. She's doing well. We think she is a pit bull and Labrador mix. But she isn't getting any bigger. Which is fine. I don't need two large dogs in the house.
For the most part, she's a great dog.
Her only flaw is that she isn't taking well to house training.
She knows she's supposed to let us know that she has to go out and sometimes she does. Other times it seems like she just pees while she's walking down the hall.
We've read that some dogs can just be incontinent.
So we're putting diapers on her. We get the baby diapers at Aldi's, cut a hole in them for the tail and she's usually good until she starts to try and get them off.

So, I'm asking for some advice. This little dog seems to have picked up some of the house training but sometimes it's like she's never heard a word we've said. This is the second dog I've owned that had to be taught. The other dog has no problem telling us he needs to go out. This dog, almost an adult by now is either resisting the training, is too stupid to train or she has a physical problem preventing her from being successfully house trained.

We don't have a back yard. When it's time to go outside, one of us has to put our shoes on and take her out.

Do any of you have some good ideas for this dog? I'm trying to avoid "sending her to live on the farm".

You can try the pee pads. If she is having incontience problems, you may want to check with the vet....sometimes spaying can help. I do know it helps with male dogs(neutering) when they ‘leak’ or have excitement problems. But im not really sure on females. Check with the vet.
As far as house training, try to get her on a schedule also. Same times, same number of times a day regardless if they need to go in between.
Good luck !

I should have mentioned that she's spayed. We tried the Pee Pads but she either tears them up or she ignores them.
The scheduling concept is something I would like to try.

My current dog was exactly like that. I talked to my vet and long story short. I took my dog out frequently. I mean not twice or three times a day but sometimes up to 10+ a day and lavishly praised when he made it outside. Every time he made a mess inside I would clean it up with a cleanser that removed all odors. In about 3 or so months he was house trained and only goes out three times a day now. Three times because sometimes incontinence is also due to the stress of not being exercised enough. We now walk 20mins in the morning and 20mins at night. He is now the best little dog and all it took was for me to give him the attention for him to succeed. Hope that helps!

That is something I had not considered. I'll start taking her for walks and see if that makes a difference.

Long walk, every day, twice a day, on the same schedule. We placed a strap of bells on the door handle in the carport door and our dog figured out real quick that a.) Dad doesn't like pee in the house and b.) batting the strand of bells with her nose let us know she wanted out.

What I've done in past is staying with them when you take them out. Make sure you ask them if they need to go. Make sure they give you a sign a bark or something. Take them right then. When they potty make it a big deal. Praise them up immediately in a high pitch voice excited. A treat on the spot don't wait. The only time they get that certain treat is when they potty outside. As time goes on praise on the spot. But they get treat further from potty area. Until they get inside the house.
I've used 1/2 of vienna sausage to dog bones. Had pretty good luck doing it this way. A pian at first but don't take long.
