Experiment with a hot tub first. Since you have no kids use the hot tub to make kids.
Seriously, it's like adding another bill a month & people will use you for it and piss in it at the same time!
I have an above ground, went to Iraq last year and the wife couldnt keep it "in line" (not to mention my Mal and GSD thought the pipes were chew toys). This summer its a frog pond. When they are kept up they are nice, but you ever slip and let it go.........money pit. Also, if you are thinking of selling the house later, sometimes pools will bring the value down. Safety: Have to have a fence, signage and a gate for most insurance companies to insure things.
We have an in-ground salt water pool, bought the house 5 years ago.
The only question the insurance guy had was " do you have or plan on getting a trampoline?"

I've been a pool owner for 12 years. Get an umbrella policy with your home. Yeah, its work, but worth it when ya get to make your own rules and enjoy it on your own terms.
We have a pool and our insurance wasn't even a fraction higher. They just asked if there was a fence and that was it. I do have an umbrella policy though. I have vinyl liner and actually switched to all chemicals with an ionizer. I buy bulk at the beginning of the year no more than $200. I don't waste $$$ on metal away, clarifier, and algae killer. Or those expensive opening and closing kits. Just a bucket of shock, chlorine, and baking soda(Costco). Never gets cloudy or green. Just vacum and maintain balance.

had a pool at my old house its expensive to maintain i think mine averaged about 3-4k year, but you can probably cut that in half if you maintain it yourself
Pools are great to have and not that expensive to own if you know what you are doing. The key is not to let it go to **** in the winter time.I spend about 300.00 a year and many people enjoy many hours in the pool. To me that is some CHEAP entertainment! Our insurance was not affected as long as the proper fence was installed. Anything above 500.00 means your not doing something right with the pool.
Run! I have a pool and ****ing hate it! It's a waste of money, the chemicals cost too much. It's not worth the hassle.
