How do you deal with stumps or how do you know the water is low?

We got up this morning and left out early for River Bend in Cusseta on the Chatahoochee. We got there and leaving the dock I noticed we churned mud. I should have realized then that the water was low. We went to a spot we had good luck in two weeks ago. We we riding along and ran up on/hit a stump underwater. I decided we would just ease a little further. It was like a landmine of stumps. I looked at the bank and noticed the water was clearly down. We turned around and eased out. At that point my nerves and my wife's nerves were on edge. I'm in an 1852 with a tiller handle and its snatched the handle a few times. We decided we would go to a spot we were very familiar but we were still nervous and it killed the fun of the day.
River bend doesn't report water height. Is there a way to.know without driving hour?
is there a secret to stumps other than don't hit them and just know the are.under you and hope the water is high enough

I hink it’s just going and marking on your fish finder.i sometimes find one were I’ve fished several times.

My boat will float in 1' of water. You just need to know the area. A depth finder helps a lot too. Between an out board, trolling motor and a paddle I can go a lot of places and did. Don't run your motor in mud. It can clog it up

Lake Weiss has a lot of stumps we adjusted the Trolling motor as high as possible, tilted the outboard as far up as it would go and traveled on

We took off from the ramp and about 50 yards out was a 2-3 foot section of dirt. Once I realized what was going on I trimmed it up but we were past the spot. It was like a sandbar in the middle of nowhere where

Gots to stay in the channel. Most of the time, there are markers. Maybe not where you were. I remember a friend talking about running aground in the ocean. Honestly, I don't even like running my motor in less than @ 6' of water. Just me I guess. I know at times, that's hard to do
