Standing still is supposed to be done if you discover them after they are within striking distance and even that is BS. The closest call I ever had was with a copperhead that I spotted when he was already between my feet. I snapped the foot he was focused on away immediately and it saved me from getting bit. I actually saw his head flash under my boot to the other side as I lifted it. He would have nailed me.
