'Chat', can also be what we do on Facebook messenger. To talk to others in messenger is to chat. There are several ways of defining the term. Its basically just a word for 'talk'..

For example..

Guy asked 2 people standing nearby, "Hey, what are you guys doing over there?"

2 people respond, "We're just chatting."
