There was a similar case in North Carolina back in the 80's. The man got off of all charges. His lawyer argued that fact that the horse is a sentient being with its own mind.

Same in the UK I remember many years ago, the guy argued that he had been going to the pub for years and the horse always carried he home and that he was not in charge of it, rather it was the other way round. The judge agreed.
