My first was a SR 5", great gun, and it comes with a lot of the upgraded features. My second/favorite, is a 5" Colt XSE, can't beat a Colt, but they're a little pricey, a little more than your budget. The Ruger would be a solid first buy. Like you, I bought mine for recreation, so I wanted the full sized rather than the Commander, ether way it's a good buy.

I bought a metroarms American Classic II for $480 out the door at academy a month ago. Its fit and finish is very nice. As nice as my E-Series Smith. No rattles and racks and shoots like butter.
