Identify this Navy ship

Pre WWII

My Grandfather may have served on it as a Marine.
No clue what it is or where the picture was taken.
Obviously damaged in an accident or attack.
Any ideas would be helpful.

The pic was probably taken on or about Oct 25, 1933, at Mare Island near San Francisco.
