I’m thinking for giving IDPA a try and seeing how it goes. Who that shoots IDPA wants to fill me in and let me know what I need to know?

Possible pistols:

G34 MOS w/Holosun 507 Comp
G17
G26
Springfield EMP 9mm 1911
Springfield SA35 9mm

The G17 has a Glock Performance Trigger, and the G26 has an aftermarket trigger. The others are stock.

I have done USPSA and PCSL. IDPA stresses more true defensive pistol skills(use of cover) rather that the game of USPSA. The spirit of IDPA is to be better with what you carry, so I would shoot it with what you carry rather than with a competition rig and gun that you prob wont have if you get into a defensive situation. Just my humble opinion.

I shoot idpa a decent amount(2021 overall state champ) not to toot my own horn. haha Any of those pistols will work. Just depends on what division you want to shoot.

The 34 is good for CO
17 will be ESP with the GPT.
26 is good for BUG or ESP
SA35 is good for SSP or ESP
EMP is for ESP

Glock 26 will limit you a bit and a little slower on reloads etc. As I would also steer from the little EMP which also has reliability issues in competition for some reason. All of the Glocks with only reasonable reliable upgrades will allow you to focus on shooting, thinking and the sport and not keeping a finicky gun running. They will also force you to become a very good marksman. I find they lock into your hand nicely with single handed shooting which becomes a real weakness for most IDPA shooters in match settings.

SA35 very cool and accurate gun, I hate the ergonomics of the thumb safety and magwell. It would be a nicer range an recreational cool fun gun but it's days of sitting beside trophies, mostly over. The G17 with irons might allow you to shoot SSP division with 15+1 magazine load out. That can be an advantage with some stages. Almost all other divisions are now 10+1.

Any gun with an optic goes into CO division. CO is by far the dominating division these days with the reliability and popularity of optics. I personally never own a gun without the optic cowitnessing the irons. During press check I make sure they agree and I use the irons if something goes dead on the optic. I also draw, present to the top of the slide and use whichever sight comes up first. I never lose my dot either.

I would NEVER mount an optic using the stock OEM glock plates. I either use a C&H mounting plate or I go to the trouble of buying a NO PLATE direct mount optic which also allows me to see the factory height irons. Oddly enough I've been shooting a performance center M&P 2.0 with optic for 3-4 years mainly because I needed to stick with the same gun in order to win a few championships but I still draw and manipulate a G17/G19 faster than any other model. I have competed with a G34 but I liked the Gen 3/4 version better than the gen5 for some reason.

Good luck, get your hits and learn the game very cleanly and smoothly. Speed will come naturally over time. I also believe shooting USPSA as practice will make you a far greater IDPA shooter. That can be said for steel challenge too. I have 2 IDPA training clinics per month located in Cumming but good luck and have fun.

P.S. Yes that comp optic on G34 would be ideal for IDPA with a very strong holster and belt. Look at the magnetic universal mag pouch made by Midwest Competition. It's a game change for lightning reloads and insertion at the start signal.

I would do the G34 or G17. mags are easy to find, cheap, and take a beating without any issues.

I always shot idpa with a G35 and conversion barrel to 9mm. I shot a lot with west GA tactical shooters or something like that back then, you can find them on facebook. I would not do anything smaller than a G19. The sight radius is just too short and the reloads are rough.

I would think putting a stock trigger in the 17 or remove the optic from the 34. This will allow you to shoot in stock division until you figure out the basics. Im dumb enough to probably shoot it with my 26 since that is what I carry but dont fool yourself into thinking you will finish in the top vs folks running fullsize guns they dont carry. Disclaimer Ive never shot IDPA or any match beyond a monthly defensive handgun match held at a local range.

Well it’s time for you to get out there.

And don’t take the optic off! Dots are way easier/faster than irons. Beginner or not

I was thinking the optic may put him in a more basic category.

I dont know where the nearest IDPA match would be. I may look into that.
