Well, it sounds like you're doing all you can at the moment locally but read on…

I went straight from the military to LE so let me just to shoot you straight.

1. No one on this board or anywhere else can expedite you into a job in LE. It's a time consuming endeavor that takes the time that it takes. It's just a lengthy process for obvious reasons.

2. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You what a job in LE? Then you go where the jobs are. If its close to home then good for you. Most won't be in the beginning. By limiting yourself to close to home agencies then you are really going to be playing small odds of getting hired.

3. You want a job in LE then treat it like applying to colleges. Apply EVERYWHERE that is even a remote possibility of getting on. Your competing against applicants right out of the military with combat experience, people with college degrees (often preferred by LE agencies) and other officers from other departments that already have their POST mandate and experience.

Yeah, APD might be far away but I'll bet if they called you right now and said your hired you'd be there Monday morning at 0530 no problem. You see what I'm getting at?

The hiring process is sort of a insight to the job itself. It takes up a lot of time and requires a lot of you personally. Its not for everyone. Good luck.

very true and i understand that and your right if they called id be there. when i was working for the fire dept right out of high school i was applying for full time positions all over the country but now i have a kid which the relocating a much harder issue. and just like with my certificaitons i had to get with the fire dept it took months and for certain ones it took a year and there is always another class u should take. I am very dedicated to wanting a career in public service most of my family have worked in rescue or law enforcement. thanks for your advice deff given me alot to think about for now just got to keep applying and hope to hear back from somewhere whitfield county where i live has several openings ive applied for and they prefer to hire local so fingers crossed.

I am a CPA. Find out if you are going to get a W-2 or a 1099 at the end of the year or at least by January 31 of 2014. Let's start from there. I am also in Human Resources. WC1911guy provided some very good advice in my opinion regardless of the type of job you are looking for. You also mentioned something about taxes eating you alive. I don't know what that means more than taxes eating everyone alive. As a a true independent contractor, you may pay less taxes. If you have been paid off the books for years....you will surely draw attention to yourself if you start filing as an IC. Just one man's humble opinion. Good luck.

Any local community college probably has a criminal justice programs. Any courses you complete will look good in the resume. Check with any 4 year colleges about online courses in same area. You've got the lay of the land, and you can see that anything you can do to buff up that resume will help.

You might check with some mid-size cities. Athens Clarke County always has openings because of high turnover due to low pay. ACCPD is basically the minor league for Gwinnett and Cobb. Also any good size sheriff's office is usually looking for jailers, which is an entry position a lot of current LEO have used.

Don't take it personally, but it sort of reads like you are trying to cherry pick when there's been a crop failure. I'm surprised you received an offer for a state job, and I would have thought twice about turning it down. You're not exactly making a three year commitment to the Marines.
