First elecectric vehicle came out in 1835. I think they've had long enough to figure this out....
25 years ago, an electric vehicle was dozens of lead acid batteries and would go less than a hundred miles. Today a Tesla is as good or better than a (name your favorite car) if you are willing to use it only around town without going on anything resembling a roadtrip of more than XXX miles.

By 2040 the batteries and the charging systems will be better. We might even see some huge game-changer in terms of capturing solar energy.

25 years ago I read an article about Hyundai exploring making an electric truck that ALSO had a beer barrel sized auxiliary power unit (APU) to both power the vehicle and recharge the batteries to exceed the100 mile limitation. They never produced that vehicle.

The 2024 electrics far exceed the vehicles built 25 years ago. In another 25 years they’ll probably be a valid alternative to internal combustion. Right now the hybrid is a good choice if you can stand the sticker price. My wife loves her 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid. 35+ mpg and better acceleration than most passenger cars.

Until "refueling" times are comparable to ICE (or close enough to be acceptable), pure electric will not be a replacement.
Accomplishing that by pumping electrons would take thousands of amps. And not only the ability to handle that in conductors, charging ports, and power supplies, but more importantly batteries that can take that (without degrading). That will take fundamental improvements to all parts of the system.
Alternately, it could be accomplished by swapping batteries in some fast and convenient manner, or returning to liquid based batteries and swapping out charging fluid, or something similar.

Then, the infrastructure will have to be as wide spread as gas stations (which would be simplest if it's something that can be added to gas stations).
No matter what, it will take quite a while.

Meh….until they get to where an atomic engine of some sort is invented to run SAFELY on a daily basis for long trips….the gasoline and diesel powered ICE is gonna be it.
