If they've never been to a big city as you say, that means they've never been to a big league game, take'em to at least one Braves game. Everytime they see a baseball game on TV that memory will come back (good or bad), LOL.

Geotgia Aquarium is a must see. Stone Mountain laser show will never be forgotten.
Cloudland Canyon is always Nice (http://www.gastateparks.org/CloudlandCanyon/) Fort Mountain is good. (http://www.gastateparks.org/FortMountain)
I am all about Chattanooga for a Day. I like the aquarium there much better than the one in Atlanta, they run a river tour on a large jet boat that is pretty nice.
A put my vote on a Braves game as well.
For something a little different that is not that far off try Mcdanial Farm park in Gwinnett County. (http://urbanbaboon.blogspot.com/2007/07/mcdaniel-farm-park.html)
