I'm not really sure what kind of dog to get, but I'd like to have one that I could train to be obedient (I'm thinking 2-4 months of training 20-minutes each day?)
I like friendly dogs that aren't too large, but not too small, maybe 25-45lbs full grown?
I like soft fur on a dog if I can get it, or at least soft ears. I don't mind using clippers to give him a haircut or giving him a bath once in a while if he needs it.
I'll be at home most afternoons but have stuff I do in the evenings about 4 days each week so the dog will need to be ok with being alone while I'm away (I'll probably get a house cat and let them be friends).
I might get some chickens and build a pen in the backyard, so he'll have to deal with that, and not eat the chickens. Maybe part of his job could be to keep a watch out for hawks and owls?
The yard is almost 1.5 acres pretty flat with mostly grass and trees, semi-neighborhood/semi-country. Street in front of the house is quiet with a stop sign and 25mph speed limit, lightly used, mostly in evenings. Neighbors on each side have similar lots and nothing but woods behind the property. The property has a big backyard.
There won't be a fence on the property to contain the dog, although one of the neighbors has a fence on their's and the other neighbor has pretty thick woods so there are some natural barriers that I want him to recognize.
Once trained I'd want to be able to leave for work with him outside and not worry.
I'd be fine with a rescue dog, or one that's not too expensive (sub$350)
I'd be willing to put up a dog cage in the back if absolutely necessary, but I'd prefer not to. House has a 2 car garage as well if I needed to keep him there.
I love hound dogs but I worry about their obedience, not sure about other hunting dogs?
It would be cool if it could use the litter box some of the time too.
The last thing I want is a pain in the ass or a headache. I'm willing to put in the work necessary to ensure things go well.
What kind of dog does that sound like?
I'd be interested to hear what kind of experiences you've had when trying to train a dog to be obedient and not leave the property?
I'm not in a rush, just wanting to get some information for now.
Thanks ahead of time!
