I'm not really sure what kind of dog to get, but I'd like to have one that I could train to be obedient (I'm thinking 2-4 months of training 20-minutes each day?)

I like friendly dogs that aren't too large, but not too small, maybe 25-45lbs full grown?

I like soft fur on a dog if I can get it, or at least soft ears. I don't mind using clippers to give him a haircut or giving him a bath once in a while if he needs it.

I'll be at home most afternoons but have stuff I do in the evenings about 4 days each week so the dog will need to be ok with being alone while I'm away (I'll probably get a house cat and let them be friends).

I might get some chickens and build a pen in the backyard, so he'll have to deal with that, and not eat the chickens. Maybe part of his job could be to keep a watch out for hawks and owls?

The yard is almost 1.5 acres pretty flat with mostly grass and trees, semi-neighborhood/semi-country. Street in front of the house is quiet with a stop sign and 25mph speed limit, lightly used, mostly in evenings. Neighbors on each side have similar lots and nothing but woods behind the property. The property has a big backyard.

There won't be a fence on the property to contain the dog, although one of the neighbors has a fence on their's and the other neighbor has pretty thick woods so there are some natural barriers that I want him to recognize.

Once trained I'd want to be able to leave for work with him outside and not worry.

I'd be fine with a rescue dog, or one that's not too expensive (sub$350)

I'd be willing to put up a dog cage in the back if absolutely necessary, but I'd prefer not to. House has a 2 car garage as well if I needed to keep him there.

I love hound dogs but I worry about their obedience, not sure about other hunting dogs?

It would be cool if it could use the litter box some of the time too.

The last thing I want is a pain in the ass or a headache. I'm willing to put in the work necessary to ensure things go well.

What kind of dog does that sound like?

I'd be interested to hear what kind of experiences you've had when trying to train a dog to be obedient and not leave the property?

I'm not in a rush, just wanting to get some information for now.

Thanks ahead of time!

Female dogs make much better family pets than male dogs, imo. They don’t run off as much, or lift their legs in the house.

And in general hounds aren’t very smart at all. Instead of brains they get better noses.

Most Water dogs and artic dogs don’t take the heat well.

Terriers are hard to train.

In general you can’t go wrong with a female Australian Shepherd mix rescue or border collie mix rescue. They are smart smart smart and about your size.

A well bred female Boykin spaniel would prolly be great for you also, if you want to spend the money.

If you get the wrong breed for your situation you can’t change the dog, not really.

Rereading your post it sounds like you would be very happy With a well bred female Boykin. A well bred Boykin is a super dog for Georgia.

I’d consider an invisible fence or a real fence

Leaving a dog outside all
Day. They will roam
Around usually

And Probabaly get hit by a car or eat the neighbors cats

We got a mutt from a place called homeless pets in Marietta

I think he’s part Akita
He’s meets all
Those requirements mostly

Appreciate the info guys, some funny comments as well. Plinker66 Plinker66 I was looking into the spaniels and pointers, they look like nice dogs. I like the idea of an Australian shepherd and border collie as well since they're supposed to be smart and sound like a fun dog.

I'll keep looking into these if you guys think of anything else let me know.

Lol what exactly have you trained your Bassett to do? Keep her ears dry when she eats?

He does get his ears wet when he eats.
He was very easy to potty train. He puts 1 paw up on the door To go outside
He sits. Kisses and jumps into a chair when I say “up”

He’s the seeetest dog ever
