Info about dogs, help me pick a good one.

Tippy was a rescue from our neighbors who's dog had puppies and they were taking them to the pound. Best dog we've ever had.

I would suggest stay with a cat.

Boxers are my favorite breed for lots of reasons (had 3), but I have no comment on their desire to 'roam' and personally would never have any dog free roaming, especially with woods around. If you can train a dog to not chase a deer or any other wild animal they may rarely see when you are not around, good luck.
Currently have two beagles and one "No!' was all it took for them to leave new chickens alone (OK, honestly that surprised me) but those noses would DEFINITELY get them in trouble if they weren't fenced in.
Rescues are great for all the obvious reasons and some not so obvious but they can obviously also be a crap shoot.
If you're not going to be home much, get two. A lone dog (pack animal), alone, is just depressing to me.

Go to the pound and look for a Shepherd/Lab or retriever mix. After my Shepherd passed I didn’t want to spen a ton of money on a dog. She has turned out to be a great dog.

Just remember that any kind of herding breed, Australian Shepard, Cattle dogs, Border collies are all extremely smart and easy to train, but they will need constant stimulation because of their intelligence. They are also very hyper, I have 2 cattle dogs and if was not for laser pointers to run them around the house and the back yard, I would be in real trouble.

Well, I recently decided the place would need a fence to do it right, and I've been thinking about black mouth cur dogs, although I'm still not in a rush as there are many projects on my to-do list. I've always loved hounds and the way they howl. My friend in high school had some Treeing Walker's that were good dogs. Definitely wouldn't turn anything down from the local shelter once I get the place ready for the dog(s).

Here lately, I've been thinking it would be nice to have a dog that would make a big disturbance if someone suspicious stepped foot on the property. Also been thinking it would be better if he was a little on the mean side with people he didn't know, for an added layer of security.

This sounds more reasonable. You’ll definitely have to spend some time dealing with him. And you will need that fence almost for sure. Almost any dog will require attention if you want it to be really good. Good luck!
