I like short compact scopes. most of the existing compact scopes are made by (described by some as) 2nd rate companies (Leapers, Barska, NCstar). But I found the Nikon InLine XR to be acceptable, it has good magnification range, is just a little longer than what I want but has the eye relief I want. However it is made for muzzleloaders and shotguns. Would this be OK for a 5.56/5.45/7.62 gun?

Yep. Parallax is set shorter on shotgun scopes (i've been told) at 50 - 75 yards, where most rifle scopes (that are not adjustable) are set at 100 yards. They are also typically built to handle the heavier recoil. I have a shotgun scope on my son's AR... one because it looked good on it, and also because its what I had in the safe.....works fine!
