GF has a built in microwave and oven over/under and she wants to close a gap under the oven with a piece of trim. I'm curious, the oven is electric. Is this gap necessary for ventilation?

Not that I can see.
There are two square tube "feet" that extend slightly beyond the cabinet face. I'd have to mill a recess to accommodate those.
If there's nothing similar on the top of the lower unit, you're probably OK. It may be an ease if service thing too. I've seen trim in places like that put on with hidden magnets so it could be popped off easily to pull one or the other unit out for service.
I wouldn't do it. You might be creating more heat to the area. Most things like that need at least an inch or more of space. In this case 2" because you have 2 appliances together. And even then you're talking more heat than normal if you're running both at the same time. Sometimes you're better to leave well enough alone......It's not worth burning your house down
That may be an ventilation slot to pull air into the oven.

That's what I was thinking. I'll ask her for the user guide to see.
if it bugs her too much, maybe fabricate a frame/screen piece that attaches with magnets so it can breathe while being covered?
