It is a straight up .38 the cartridges are called cowboy loads which is the lead from a .38 mated to a .357 cartridge

Ummmm no thats quite incorrect.

If its an all original gun and is a 38 it should be marked 38WCF, which is also known as 38/40.

That's right. I load a .401" lead bullet for mine. It's a slightly tapered rimmed case with a thin, really thin neck. .38 spl introduced in 1898.
