Oh and for those of you wondering, the 8mm Mauser cartridge is very shootable, pretty well available and is just a bit less kick than a normal loaded 30-06 cartridge.

Yep to all of that. Mt first deer rifle was a sporterized German k98 so I can attest to the shootability of the 8X57 round. I currently have a Yugo M48A that a good friend gifted me. Ifinally got it out about a month ago and cleaned the cosmoline off and out of it, including removing the stock to get to all of it. I have yet to shoot it but I will in the near future
