Item Description:
For Sale or Trade is my 1981 Smith & Wesson Model-36: "The 38 Chiefs Special", J Frame, 5 Shot Revolver.
This Revolver is all original to include, Box, Manual, and Serial Numbered Wood Stocks. It was produced from 1950 - 1999 with several variations along the way. This is a Model-36 (No Dash), J Prefix Revolver. Serial Numbers on the Revolver, Box, and Wood Stocks all match.
A little history on the Model-36 Revolver;
In 1950 after WW2, S&W resumed normal production of Non Wartime Weapons. For this model they sought to produce a small concealable weapon that could fire the "More Powerful" .38 Special round. Since the older "I" Frame was not able to handle the pressures, the "New" "J" frame was created. This design was introduced at the (International Association of Chiefs of Police) Convention (IACP). The Model-36 was favorably received, as a vote was held to give it the name of the "Chiefs Special". At that time until around 1957, S&W did not give their weapons Model Numbers but rather names instead. it became the Model-36 officially in 1957 but, still retains the nickname of the Chiefs Special.
Features Include;
* 5 Shot, Fluted Cylinder
* 2" Pinned Barrel
* 1/10" Serrated Ramped Front Sight
* Fixed Square Notch Rear Sight
* .240" Service Hammer
* .240" Serrated Trigger
* Weight is 19oz. (Unloaded)
+P Rated or Not +P Rated? - According to Smith & Wesson, although it is not marked on the barrel of earlier versions from S&W revolvers, any S&W revolver that has a "model number" is fully capable of firing +P Ammunition. Basically, it is not recommended to fire +P Ammunition in revolvers that are dated prior to 1957 but many experts say even that is OK but not recommended. the +P started being added to assure the general public and as a sales tactic to sell more .38 Special Revolvers. Essentially, this revolver is fully capable of handling +P, .38 Special Ammo.
It shows normal signs of wear, Locks up tight and fires as a Quality S&W Revolver should.
My trade interests would be other Small Framed Carry style Handguns. As an example, since I know that I can buy a Brand New S&W Shield 9 for $350, that would be a considered trade. Other S&W or Ruger Revolvers would also be considered.
