I'm thinking that his son physically outgrew this COMPACT rifle that has an extra-short butt stock (12.5" length of pull) and a short 16.5" barrel.
It's not the caliber or the cartridge he outgrew, but the external dimensions of the rifle itself.

Me too - I find I can bring a "Youth" gun up to my shoulder easier - especially when I am wearing three layers of clothes, a coat and an orange vest...
