Item Description: I've got an old smith and wesson 6 shot 38 special. The gun doesn't have the smith roll mark. I got in touch with a ffl that's very knowledgeable about older firearms. And after looking at the serial number and way the gun is built it was identified as a 5 screw smith and wesson. Made between 1942 and 1944. I'm just testing the waters to see whats out there before I go through the smith and wesson historical foundation for them to look up and give me all the info on this revolver.

Always thought that one was the fourth screw
I think the order in which these screws were added to the S&W K-frame revolvers design is not the same as the order that they were withdrawn.

When the design went from four screws up to five that extra screw (5th) was the one that came on the front of the frame underneath the cylinder crane assembly.
It is not visible from either the left or right side view.

But when S&W started simplifying their guns in the 1950s the screw they eliminated from the 5- screw design was the one on the top of the side plate by the hammer and rear sight.
They retained the one at the front of the cylinder crane assembly until the early 1960s.
When they rid of that screw also,
we arrived at the current generation
of K frame guns that have three screws.
