Item Description: I am looking for a Springfield model 87A for an associate who lost one years ago. This is not a fancy new gun, so I know somebody out there has one. The gun is an old school 22 S,L,LR tube feed semi-auto. The gun can easily be identified by the slots milled into the receiver which allow the bolt to be seen as it sits inside behind the chamber. The gun is not rare or incredibly valuable, but I can trade purchase credit or another gun of similar value. There can be no substitutions or "similar gun" offers please. I really need this exact rifle. If you have one and can part with it for a fair price, please get back to me. I've included a picture for your reference.

I've got a buddy who inherited several hundred firearms from a great uncle...he seems to have everything...ill be glad to ask him if he has one next time I speak with him

PM GadgetsRfun. He's an expert on older 22s like this. If he doesn't have one to sell, maybe he can point you in the right direction. Also, consider that not all of these guns are marked as Savage /Springfield 87A's. Some of them were given store-brand names and different model numbers, but it's really the exact same gun. I had one like that, made to be sold by Sears or J.C. Penney, and given their house-brand name on the receiver.

Thanks for the heads up. I will PM Him. Yeah, I figured that the same rifle was probably branded by several different resellers (a lot of guns especially 22's were re-branded back then) but I'm not an expert on that stuff. I figured this would be a good start point. Thanks again.

They call these guns the "gill guns" because of the gill-looking slots on the left side of the receiver.
I had one, but sold it because it was too heavy to use in the role I envisioned-- training kids and women to shoot rifles. The rifle was too heavy even when empty, and when all those .22 rounds (something like 18 of them!) were in the tubular mag, under the barrel, it got very front-end heavy.

Well, I didn't know that, but it makes a lot of sense that they would have called them that. I know, I've seen these things a hundred times in the shop, but they've never tickled my fancy enough to pay attention to them. Great info though. thanks!
