A LOT of action shooter prefer the non recessed cylinders for fast reloads with speed strips or speed loader.

I’ve heard you get a new version. If you had the box, it would have a red “C” sticker if they had checked it.

10-4. I thought it may have been a transition gun. They had 629 frames and they
hand stamped a 1 when they ran out of recessed cylinders. No dash.
What’s the first 3 of the serial?

Yep. That timeframe sounds right.

In the 80’s, they had to recall around 20k guns looking for 500. A metal supplier for the cylinders sent a bad batch. Part of the serial numbers included N910000 through N953000 so it looks like your gun is in it. You used to be able to email your serial number to qa@smith-wesson.com or call 1-800-331-0852.

If it was returned to them, they’d either X-ray or magnaflux the cylinder. If it fails, I’ve heard they don’t have any replacements so they don’t send yours back and you get a new model gun.
