You are thinking of the later models that had 4 digits.

This. There is another model in between the 2 and 4 digit models with 3 digits. The Model 59 is the first generation. I have a 5906 that I absolutely love!

Same here, have a 5906 that was apparently police carried for years, looks like a warhorse anyways but it shoots like a dream. The 59 (39) are like the holy grail though for these guns...
