Out of curiosity, why wouldn't they be able to put these out from the factory with a "normal" pistol grip and keep this length?

Because a normal pistol grip will make it under 26". You need that type to get the length.

OK, I stand corrected, I was under the understanding that shorter than 18: had to have rifling to be out of the AOW classification, like the Jude and Governor Revolvers.
