I just want to have a personal record documented of the sale in the event the firearm is ever used inappropriately and traced back to me.

I am open to recommendations for what info I should include. Maybe Lic# is too personal? If so, please provide suggestion on what specific info I should get. This is my first time selling a gun that I purchased new.

Here are a few threads you can look through dealing with a bill of sale.
Personally, I am not giving my lis # to a person I don't know. If you require a paper trail, you should require the buyer to meet you at a dealer and have then run the gun through their business.

I sent this in a PM... but in case you haven't found your way around the site to the PM area (private messages), I'll copy and paste it below:

Welcome to the ODT. As a moderator, I'd be happy to give ya the 411 on selling a firearm on the Trader...at least my rules of engagement that I practice.

First off, you can ask for whatever you want in regards to price and buyer information. However saying that, the community in general are not fans of a stranger having their personal information that could be lost and misused. Thus why you get a resistance for BOS's (Bill Of Sales).

I have been trading on the site for a number of years and have about a hundred deals under my belt. Here's how I do it in accordance to the law and my conscience.

  1. I build up a report over Private Messenger first when negotiating a deal.
  2. I check their feedback and personally will only deal with reputable supporters with positive feedback and preferably a lot of feedback.
  3. Sometimes I will even Private Message the members that they recently dealt with to get their feeling on the person.
  4. I exchange cell numbers and often call either during the negotiation or at very least before I am leaving to meet them to get a feeling for who they are beyond the Private Messages.
  5. We solidify the time/date, place, price, and what all is included and I confirm that in a Private Message (this is important in case you need to leave negative feedback if they would back out and leave you hanging. It also provides a digital paper trail for you.)
  6. I also only chose to make a deal during daylight hours, in a mutually convenient, well lit, heavily trafficked / busy location (gun store parking lot, WalMart parking lot, gun range parking lot, etc.)
  7. I then let them know what kind of vehicle I am driving and ask for theirs.

*with this information, I now have enough to go on to make a good judgment whether to sell/buy from this member and I leave this information with my spouse, trusted family or friend.

When meeting the individual, I strike up a conversation and get to know them. Many of my closest friends I have made through deals on this site.

I'll ask to see their GWL or Georgia Driver's License at very least (I prefer the GWL) and if they are a legal resident that legally can possess a firearm, and my Spidey Senses don't go off a tingling, I will inspect the item and upon satisfaction by both parties, make the deal, shake on it, thank them and let them know you will leave positive feedback.

Let me know if you should have any questions or issues.

For the most part, this is a great community of good people...salt of the earth, do anything for you type of people. However, always be prudent and do your due diligence.

Good Luck!
