Then there is what happened to my wife's company. The owner sold the company and the company came in and told everyone they were keeping their jobs at existing salaries. 6 months later they reorganized/rightsized the whole company. Some lost their jobs and others like her were degraded as they cut out her position.

I think the only two organizations you can retire from now without the fear of this happening is the military and the government.

Probably so.

Capitalism is the best we have so far, but it is far from perfect.

I wish there were a way to encourage morals in this system. Once it becomes corrupted, there is little difference between capitalism and fascism.

I think the whole idea of pension plans is squirrely. At a whim your retirement plans can be screwed. I'd much rather receive the money that would be withheld for a pension plan while getting the same tax benefits and invest it or save it as I see fit.

Well....

It has become that way, but for many decades those plans worked very well.

The problem is that mgmt figured out how to use the bankruptcy system to turn pension plans into an ATM. In the current environment, a 401K is much better-but it wasn't supposed to be. Pensions were great for many generations.

After almost 18 months of bs and lies I walked out the door.
Last round of bs this morning forced my hand. No notice just a polite email saying I quit and headed for the door.

I did walk out with about a half dozen down lifts in various stages or repair/disassembly and left no information as to their current condition. Which while "wrong", and something Ive never done before, I'm good with it.

Fortunately I've got something lined up, it may be a temporary position as I'm currently working with another potential employer. I've been looking to move for a month or so, today was the proverbial last straw.
