I've got $525, what type of handgun should I get?

Never needed a repair on my Glocks either, but its nice to have that service close by if needed.
I'm not hating on CZ's or Beretta, but I like knowing I can get my gun serviced and upgraded all while I wait.
Not having to mail it in for inspection is worth something to me. Oh, and if your not getting your carry weapon
service/checked out on a routine.... Good luck to ya!

fair enough

i just dont see it as a concern myself since my carry weapon is shot regularly to make sure it still works

also i love my cz but carry a sw3913 (double stack aint for me)

Since you specified carry gun...I recommend an xds 45 with prp trigger kit and talon rubber grips. Surprisingly accurate for a 3.3 inch barrel and very manageable to shoot. Get ya a box of critical defense/duty ammo and you are good to go. That can all be done with the $525. very concealable package that lends itself well to all day carry comfort and depending on clothing choice, it is pocketable. And it carries the "soul killing round" haha just kidding with the last part, but I do enjoy shooting the 45. Plenty of other great options out there for sure. I like the ergos and point of aim of the xd line. To each his own...

Arguing with a Glock guy about there being other options besides Glock is like arguing with a liberal about global warming. You just can't win. So, I recommend a Glock 32 and buy a Glock 23 barrel later and also a 9mm conversion kit with some Glock 19 mags.

I for one wouldn't consider myself a "Glock guy". I love all guns and I was anti-Glock when I first got into them. My first gun was a XD9. Great gun, never had a problem with it. But when I got my G19 just last year, after having XD, P226, HK USP, SW5906, and a Kimber I have to say that is an awesome gun. I love the way it feels, shoots, and the support as was mentioned is great.

Did you even notice that the OP said he didn't want a .40 so why would you suggest a G32 and a 23 barrel?

I didn 't read this thread, just the O.P. and now I'm jumping here to answer.
$525 to spend, and you like revolvers, and you want something to carry with a shorter barrel?
ANSWER: Get a J-frame S&W. ($375 if you shop around?) then get a Crimson Trace laser grip for it ($150).
That's 5-and-a-quarter hundred dollars, and a VERY USEFUL self-defense tool that is easy to carry and good for low-light conditions too.

That's what I carry. A S&W model 637 "Gunsmoke" special (Performance Center action job, DA-only, bobbed hammer, and some decorative external polishing). And it's wearing laser grips.

The pic shows it when it was new, with the factory standard grips on. Notice that they're the "hip grip" type, so you can carry in your waistband without needing any holster. But I prefer the laser grips.

I did notice, but why spend money on a firearm that can only have one caliber when you can spend it on a firearm that can be multiple calibers. I said 32 because it's a 357Sig, then I said a 40 barrel because when ammo shortages happen again those 2 calibers will most likely still be available. You can also get a 9mm conversation which allows him a 3rd caliber. Even if he never uses it I wouldnt limit myself just because I do prefer it.

Since you have $525.00 to spend look for a good .357 revolver. I prefer stainless. The blued is beautiful and probably less expensive to find but the stainless is easier to maintain. With this, you can fire both .357 Magnum and .38 specials and those will always be available. Those are also rounds you could get for a Ranch Hand rifle later on down the road if you choose to. Ruger has a great .357 revolver in the Six series. Security, Security or a Speed six. Comes with a great 2 3/4" barrel which is perfect for carry especially in the Speed Six. If you really look, you can probably find one of these from $300-$350. That'll leave you with enough to get both .357 and .38 special ammo. Georgia Arms .38 special brass ammo is only $15 per 50. I don't think you can beat that price. They also have .357 for like $22.50 per 50 and they even have Deer Slugger .357 for $31 bucks. You could get your gun, holster, significant amount of range and personal defense ammo for well under $450.00 and still have a little left over to take your significant other on a night out on the town.

Just my $0.02

Recommend whatever you like. If I'm buying a car and fifty out if 100 recommend a specific make and model for the price and purpose I intend, then I have gotten a strong message as to what probably will be the car I want.
