KitchenAid Bowl Lift or Tilt Head Mixer?

For those of you who know, what brands and models do you recommend for either tilt or lift? (I didn't know until now there was a difference.) My wife's tilt mixer broke and she needs a new mixer. She's a great cook and chef, but not a pro, so neither of us knows what really to look for.

I think we'd both get a kick out of telling people we get our baking advice from a gun forum! ;-)

My wife was excited to get hers. I can’t tell you which model it was or if she likes it. I think I’ve seen her use it once over the years.

Everyone I know who owns and uses a stand mixer, either has or wishes they had a KitchenAid. They aren't cheap nor are the multitude of attachments available for them, but they are pretty durable. I know people who have had the same one for over 25 years. They have a lot of models to choose from depending on your budget and how much power you want.

When I was in culinary school (about 10 years ago) I bought myself a refurbished industrial model Kitchen Aid (with the lifting bowl) and have used it ever since. I would check the refurbished models if you're not looking to spend too much on a Kitchen Aid. I think mine was $300 bucks and thats a pretty good deal for an industrial one. There may be less options in pretty colors but mine has been used a whole heck of a lot and I've never had any issues. The bowl that lifts into place (in my opinion) is the best and most practical. Kitchen Aid also has a million attachments! I got an ice cream maker bowl for mine on clearance a few years ago and that thing is pretty awesome!

My lovely wife has the bowl lift model. She has used it for years and loves it. They are great machines, as Jeddak stated the bowl lift type doesn’t make a big mess when mixing flour, eggs and milk. Lots of useful attachments for these too. We have an ice cream maker for ours that we use quite often. You can also get a grinder to make hamburger or sausage with too.

I have the ice cream maker too and I love it! :)

I make pretty good mashed potatoes with mine. Put the cooked potatoes in the bowl using the wire whisk. As the mixer is breaking them down, add 1/2 stick melted butter. Then 1/3 cup warmed whipping cream. Let mix, then speed it up and let it fluff up the potatoes. Good stuff!

They do in fact make some of the best mashed potatoes. I bought my wife a Artisan tilt head 2 years ago, but I use it more than she does. We also got a pasta attachment (used it once), slicing/shredding attachment (great if you are going to be doing a lot of shredding, PITA to clean), and a coring/slicing attachment (I use this one a lot for making apple pies). The glass bowls aren't really a standard size, so the plastic shield doesn't work on it well. Get a stainless bowl if it doesn't have one already. I used mine for Thanksgiving to whip up the ingredients for 4 pumpkin pies at one time in the same bowl. If you need one, there is nothing like it.

Almond yellow. Likely late 70's. It was in mint condition and in a custom built cabinet with all the attachments, grinder, sausage maker, ice crusher, ice cream maker, etc.
