Lab owners, I need your help ASAP!

Grain Free Diet. Please. Dogs do not eat grains. You can get decent grain free food almost the same price as the junk.

.

Not sure where you got that B.S. from. Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores. Grain free dog food is just a selling gimmick to increase sales. No proven science behind it.
Dogs are most definitely carnivores. Their tooth structure shows that. And thier molars are made for chopping meat not grinding plants. Also what happens when a dog eats any green plant? They puke.

Try doing some actual research before posting next time...I'll be nice and leave my comment at that.

I worked for a pet food distributor in PA when I had my Lab so was able to try many different kinds of food, he was allergy-free on good quality food that was mostly a fish & potato blend.

Dogs don't eat grain in the wild, especially corn. If they are getting grains it's from the stomach contents of prey. Open a can of tripe: dogs love it, it's partially digested grains & grasses.

Go easy on the rawhide chews, pig ears or real bones from a butcher shop/BBQ place are a healthier alternative.

Moving on...

The biggest difference in dogs that I've seen as been with the dog owners. Good owners have good pets, no matter what breed. Starting with a good breed like a Lab certainly helps though!

Bear44 is your best bet. If you don't know anything about dogs, invest in some training and you'll save time, money, and frustration during the next 15 years that your dog is alive.

Good luck

Got a lab mix 9 months ago at about 4-5wks old. Abandoned litter and mom.
We started a thread about it some months back.
He is so smart, he could sit on command at 6-7weeks! I was impressed and so were many others that couldn't believe such a young puppy could learn a sit/stay. He learns other commands very fast and easy too.
The chewing has not been a problem but he gets lots of running, swimming and fetching work. Walk or run these dogs and you and the dog will be much happier. Otherwise he probably would chew on everything but it hasn't been a problem. I gun broke him w a 10/22 and moved up to pistols. He has no problem with any firearms or fireworks or thunderstorms.
He is now fetching buoys and training ducks out of the lake! He just loves it!
Better food makes a big difference in his coat so I'm sure it's gotta be better for him. We tried switching to a cheaper brand (beneful) and it was no good. Loss of appetite and coat was dull. And we mixed food for a month very gradually changing all the way over to beneful. Back on blue buffalo now and all is well. More money but we believe its worth it. Get them kids walking the dog everyday and he/she can learn anything with only 10-15min a day but be consistent.
Your lab will be the best addition!!

KONG toys!!! They seem pricey but when you take into consideration that you could spend $15 on 3-4 toys that your lab will be able to destroy in 1-7 days if not sooner or have one kong that lasts months if not years, it's a much cheaper option.

Also, check out dogsupplies.com

I've used them many times & they are very trustworthy & well priced.
