Can someone school me on why to have a red dot on a pistol?

Instead of having to concentrate on three focal planes under stress, you now only have to worry about a "screen" with a dot on it. It takes a bit of training to dial it in but after that, it absolutely is a force multiplier.

It is also great for those who are older who's eye sight isn't as good as it used to be.
