Not sure how I feel about this answer...

Dear Mr. XXXXXX.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban. Your taking the time to contact me is appreciated .

As a parent and grandparent, there are no words to describe my grief at the senseless loss of life at Sandy Hook Elementary School. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Newtown, Connecticut community, and all of the victims, families, and loves ones of this horrible tragedy . I join the rest of the nation in offering my prayers to all of those impacted.

In response to this and other tragic and high-profile acts of violence, there is a renewed focus on this expired legal provision. I believe that Congress will have an extensive and detailed debate about all of the potential causes of these tragic crimes, including mental health issues, depictions of violence in television, movies, and video games, and firearms. Your comments are important, and I will remember them as the debate moves forward.

On September of 1994, Congress passed and President Clinton signed into law the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act" (P.L. 103-322). This legislation prohibited the sale of certain semi-automatic weapons, often referred to as the assault weapons. On September 13, 2004 the ban expired.

I have always been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, and I will continue to ensure the rights of gun owners will not be further infringed upon. We must make certain that the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens are not infringed upon. I believe that the ability of sportsmen, hunters, gun enthusiasts and citizens concerned with their personal safety to own a gun, whether for sport or protection is clearly defined in the Constitution and must not be compromised.

I know that dialogue regarding acts of violence will likely result in a wide range of legislative proposals seeking to address the underlying causes. As these pieces of legislation come before me in the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind.

I got the same one.

The one I got from Rep. Phil Gingrey was even worse. It did not even acknowledge that I wrote about the 2nd amendment.

Dear Mr. Shaw:

Thank you for contacting me to express your opinion regarding the horrific attack that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As your Congressman, I appreciate hearing your thoughts and welcome every opportunity to be of service.

As you are aware, on December 14, 2012, tragically, a single gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire on both students and faculty of the school. The attack claimed the lives of 26 individuals at the school. Of those victims, 20 were first grade students and the remaining were adults – including Principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach – who sacrificed their lives trying to keep those children out of harms way. Before he could be apprehended by law enforcement officials, the gunman – Adam Lanza – committed suicide at the scene.

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of this attack. What took place in Newtown, Connecticut on that day was an unspeakable tragedy, and it has absolutely no place in our society. I am deeply disturbed by the actions that occurred, and for the sake of the victims and their families, I hope that the investigation will provide more information to the cause of this attack.

At the same time, in the midst of the chaos at Sandy Hook Elementary, the faculty and personnel who took it upon themselves to protect children from this senseless attack deserve special recognition. They are heroes in the truest sense of the word, and their bravery embodies the very best of what our country is about.

In the aftermath of the attack in Connecticut, as a grandparent of grandchildren currently in elementary school, I am reminded of fragile life is, and it is incumbent on us to make sure that when we send children to school, we send them to a safe environment. As we continue to grieve for the loss of these 26 souls and pray for their families, I wholeheartedly believe that we need to find ways to avoid these catastrophic acts in the future.

This attack is a solemn reminder of the importance of being a public servant for Northwest Georgia. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor the investigation of this tragedy and any legislation that may come before the House on this matter.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns. If you feel that I may be of additional assistance on this, or any other matter of importance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me. I also invite you to sign up for my weekly email newsletter, or to share your ideas and opinions, by visiting my website at http://gingrey.house.gov or emailing me at gingrey.ga@mail.house.gov.
